Age Spots

Age spots (aka liver spots, sun spots)(the proper term is solar lentigo [singular] or solar lentigines [plural] can show up anywhere and on anybody. They are the result of sun exposure.

Skin cells called melanocytes produce melanin to protect your skin from sun damage. Overproduction of this melanin can lead to age spots and other pigmentation changes.

Age spots can come in different shapes and sizes. Some are small as a freckle, others are much larger. The colours can range from brown to gray black in color.

It is worth mentioning that the development of age spots is a sign you are not be protecting yourself from the sun well enough, and sun exposure can cause skin cancer.

A lot of people also believe "liver spots" are a sign of liver disease. These spots are related to sun exposure, and have nothing to do with the health of your liver.

It is also believed that age spots appear after you turn 40. However, age spots can show up much sooner if you don't wear sunscreen or protect yourself from the sun.

There are a number of things we can do to help you fight age spots.

Age Spots Solutions

Cosmeceuticals

These are cosmetics with pharmaceutical properties. Unlike pure cosmetics that simply cover or decorate the skin, cosmeceuticals have measurable biologic effects on the skin. Some cosmeceuticals have pigment fighting properties.* These include hydroquinone, alpha-hydroxy acids, retinols, and vitamin C.

York Laser and MedSpa offers free cosmeceutical consultations with our medical esthetician or RN to address your skin's specific needs.

Don't forget about sunscreen! After all, prevention is easier than treatment.

The Pixel

Laser resurfacing with the Pixel can help your acne scars, fine lines, skin texture, pigmentation, and shallow scars.*

Photorejuvenation

We can utilize IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to help you. The IPL's intense light is absorbed by pigment spots. These dark structures instantaneously heat up and are damaged by this intense light. The body then repairs this minor damage, and in doing so the pigment spots are sloughed off and lighten.*

Peels

Peels work in part by producing a controlled chemical injury to the skin. The injured skin "peels" off and is replaced by healthier skin. Pigment reduction can occur.*
