They can control acne and pigmentation, and they have excellent anti-aging properties.
Used regularly, peels are one of the best maintenance techniques available for your skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Peels work in part by producing a mild chemical injury to the skin. The injury triggers the healing response resulting in healthier skin.*
There are three categories of peels: superficial, medium, and deep. We offer peels that are in the superficial category.
Superficial peels usually result in mild to moderate "peeling".
Medium depth peels use concentrated trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to cause significant "peeling" and require 7-10 days of healing time. We do offer a TCA peel, but it is weaker than a medium peel, being in the strong end of the range of superficial peels.
Deep peels use phenol to cause deep injury. They require 20-30 days for healing. We don't do these peels. Not many places offer deep peels anymore. They have been replaced by laser resurfacing, because lasers have a highly predictable depth of injury.
The more severe the problem being treated, the deeper the peel needed. The deeper the peel, the longer is the healing and the higher are the risks.
Superficial peels are used to produce an improvement in overall skin health and appearance. Over the course of several treatments, a gradual improvement will occur in the color of skin, as uneven pigmentation decreases. You may also notice an improvement in texture with reduction of fine lines. Your skin should feel smoother.*
Deeper peels can significantly reduce acne scarring and deep wrinkles, but we don't offer these.

At York Laser and MedSpa, we offer several types of superficial peels of varying strengths. They all have potent anti-oxidant properties.
Our peels contain alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids and many other ingredients such as retinoic acid (vitamin A acid).
Any skin can be treated, but the most common areas treated are the face, neck, chest, and hands.
Almost everyone from 20 to 80 could benefit from peels.* However, advanced age, smoking, and excessive sun exposure can leave skin severely damaged, and superficial peels are not very effective in these cases. Peels should be thought of as partially restorative (returning skin to better health) but mostly a maintenance technique.
After cleansing the skin, the peeling substance is applied. This is left for a few minutes, then another layer is applied, and so on. At each step, you will be asked how your skin feels. When it starts to feel hot, the treatment is finished.
Treating the entire face takes about 30 minutes.
When done properly, superficial peels cause mild discomfort. People describe a sting or heat during treatment.
Most people have no problems following peels. No downtime is expected.
There may be some dryness and flaking. There may be some redness and irritation. The heat or tingling felt during treatment may persist beyond the day of treatment.
Beneficial effects of peels can be seen following the first treatment, but the results improve with each treatment.*
Most people require 4-8 treatments for maximum benefit, but this depends on the severity of the problem being treated.
Peels do not provide permanent improvement and maintenance treatments are suggested at 3 month intervals. Again, this varies widely depending on the condition being treated. For example, acne patients might require monthly treatments.

Superficial peels are very safe.
Rarely, overly aggressive treatment can actually increase pigmentation.
Peels can trigger cold sores.
Rarely, patients experience an exuberant reaction in which there is redness and skin irritation that might persist for a week.
There are several treatment options including photorejuvenation (IPL), OxyGeneo, laser skin resurfacing, and surgical facelifts. You should also stop smoking, start using cosmeceuticals regularly, and use sunscreen every day!
