Pigmentation

Nearly 90% of people get some sort of pigmenation in their life. There are three types of pigmentation problems: sun pigmentation (aka age spots), melasma (hormone-driven pigmentation, aka pregnancy mask), and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

The most common by far is sun pigmentation. To keep skin healthy you need to make an effort to cover up with protective clothing and sunscreen.

The good news is most of these pigmentation problems are treatable. Different problems require different solutions, so there is no cure-all treatment.

York Laser and MedSpa offers a variety of custom solutions.*

Cosmeceuticals

These are skin care products with pharmaceutical properties. Unlike pure cosmetics that simply cover or decorate the skin, cosmeceuticals have measurable biologic effects on the skin. Cosmeceuticals can make a dramatic difference to pigment.* In our clinic it is the preferred method for treating melasma, specifically with Obagi Nuderm.

The Pixel

Laser resurfacing with the Pixel can help your pigmentation.* In most cases, there are easier treatments for pigmentation, so the Pixel is only used if you have other issues like acne scars, fine lines, and skin texture issues.

Photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation refers to the use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat pigment and blood vessels. The IPL's intense light is absorbed by blood vessels and pigmented areas. These dark structures instantaneously heat up and are damaged. The body then repairs this minor damage. IPL is the most common treatment for sun pigmentation, because it is quick and effective.* IPL cannot be used for melasma because there is a significant risk of making it worse.

Peels

Peels work in part by producing a controlled chemical burn to the skin. The injured skin "peels" off and is replaced by healthier skin with less pigment.*
